Monkey Lab

Mon, 01/07/2013 - 5:17pm -- Dav

Monkey Lab is the first piece that Rob Voisey and I created under the moniker Elevator Machine Room. It is a ‘spoken-word opera’ in the storytelling traditions of Robert Ashley’s operas, Laurie Anderson’s performance art, and Ira Glass’s This American Life. Its artistry relies not only on the content of the story but also on the telling. Many of the methods and structure parallel musical composition. Plot, pacing, and inflection relate directly to form, tempo, and timbre respectively.

Excavations

Tue, 12/18/2012 - 8:41pm -- Dav

Excavations was created in collaboration with choreographer Emily Lawrence while she was teaching at Kenyon College. This piece uses video cameras to track dancers' motion and generate sound in reaction to the action.

Beta Version

Fri, 12/14/2012 - 12:26am -- Dav

Beta Version is an interactive dance performance piece that I created for a performance at OSU in collaboration with Shawn Hove and Brent Haley.

Flute Club

Thu, 12/13/2012 - 11:05pm -- Dav

Flute Club comes from the tradition of composers working with popular dance forms. From the minuet and the gigue, to the waltz and the foxtrot, to the bolero and the tango, there is a rich history of music written in these forms. Now, one of our modern forms—the dance club—is explored as the basis for a new work. The thumping “four-on-the-floor” bass pounding out every beat, the droning, looping synth lines, the harmonic stasis, and the seemingly boundless energy of this style come to the fore here.

Sunshine & Dirt

Thu, 12/13/2012 - 10:51pm -- Dav

This is my second soundscore for Ashley A Friend, composed for her performance at the Joyce SoHo Theater in NYC. We explored a lot of concepts for this project, including geography, communication, nature, and our relationship with our respective art forms. The soundscore weaves sampled sounds into ambient and minimalist textures that question what it means to compose.

Electric Xmas in the Window

Tue, 11/13/2012 - 11:55pm -- Dav

Every year I get tired of Christmas music. So much of it is terrible, and all of it is played too much. So one year I created Electric Xmas in the Window, a perfect antidote to the onslaught of saccharine drenched holiday cheer.

Use the files below to make your very own cd-envelope (download, print, and assemble) or to promote Electric Xmas by printing this flyer and hanging it in a public space.

Nearing / The Rhythm of Things

Fri, 11/09/2012 - 11:09pm -- Dav

In 2005, I was commissioned to compose soundtracks for two video-dances produced for WOSU television in Columbus, Ohio. These were created in collaboration with Norah Zuniga-Shaw and Mary Rathke. Nearing was composed using samples of music by Mike Vargas, a marimba performance by Joe Krygier, and my own field recordings. The Rhythm of Things was composed in collaboration with percussionist Joe Krygier. In addition to working with his loops and recordings I manipulated the field recordings and ambient sound to give them a rhythm of their own.

Flurotica

Wed, 11/07/2012 - 12:26am -- Dav

Flurotica was composed for Rebecca Ashe to play at Electronic Music Midwest in 2010. She is a performer with a distinct performance presence and the ability to pull of a piece with some crazy staging. I took this opportunity to compose something a little different, something that includes some theatrical staging and performance. For this project I repurposed the musicI had created for Two Burlesques, eliminating the video and adding a flute part.
